Several years ago, my lifelong friend Clifton Stubblefield had just completed his handmade violin. During a visit to my workshop he urged me to build a violin in my shop using my power tools where practical. I did not have a clue what would be involved, but after studying books and plans that Cliff had loaned me, I saw it as a challenge and promised him I would build one violin. Cliff brought me his Stradivarious model form to use, and depending on his violin knowledge, I completed my first violin. Hearing the first sounds coming from my violin in the hands of Cliff was all that was needed to hook me as a violin maker. I have used the combination of our last names as the label name of my instruments, " GREENFIELD".
In the past years many violins have been made and repaired in my shop. I have made pictures during the construction of these and placed them in this website along with descriptions and items of interest with each instrument. To my ear, all my instruments have a pleasant tone and vary from violin to violin . I listen to the advice of an excellent violin player, Dr. Mack Snoderly, who has played all my violins and I adjust the tones as he recommends. Since I am only an amateur violin player but a fairly good woodworker, I concentrate on the craftsmanship, artistry, and beauty of my violins.
I would like to express my thanks to Clifton Stubblefield, Dr. Mack Snoderly, and Wayne Edmondson for their help and advice in my attempt to make quality instruments.
